Why Spray Tan?

Spray tanning is a safer, healthier alternative to getting a natural glow or a desired level of tan to boost your confidence, hide imperfections, and to accentuate and add to your style.

What brand of tanning solution do you use?

Aviva Labs.

How does a spray tan work?

Dihydroxyacetone (or DHA for short) is the tanning ingredient in all self-tanning formulas. DHA creates a tanned appearance by developing a brown color on the surface of the skin thus creating a tanned appearance. DHA is a colorless 3-carbon sugar that when applied to the skin causes a chemical reaction with amino acids in the surface cells of the skin producing a darkening effect. DHA does not damage skin as it only affects the outermost cells of the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. The tan typically lasts 5 to 7 days and begins to fade as the top layer of skin cells naturally sheds.

Is DHA safe?

The sunless tanner dihydroxyacetone is currently the most popular way of gaining a tan-like appearance without sun exposure as it carries less health risks than any of the other available methods. To date, it is the only active ingredient approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for sunless tanning. The FDA has tested and approved DHA for use on the skin.

Will my spray tan make me look orange?

No. Aviva Labs' cosmetic bronzer is perfectly blended to give your clients that “just off the beach” look and their spray tan solution features a “what you see if what you get” effect meaning that the bronzer color they see initially exactly matches their resulting DHA spray tan. They also offer different DHA solutions in Winter Glow (our lightest formula), 8%, 10%, 12% and 14% DHA to insure that each client receives the proper amount of DHA for their skin tone.

How does Aviva's personalized color system work?

Aviva Labs' spray tan technician uses a Fitzpatrick Scale (a Skin Type Guide) based on a person's undertone and desired level of tan to determine which Aviva Labs Spray Tan Solution is perfect for each skin type.

Is it safe to spray tan if you are pregnant?

According to the American Pregnancy Association (americanpregnancy.org), not only is it safe, but it is recommended over sun beds or being outside for prolonged periods of time (sunbathing). But please consult with your Doctor and obtain permission beforehand.

What would NOT make me the best candidate for a tan spray?

If you have any persistent skin conditions such as open wounds, rashes, dry patches, eczema, psoriasis, active sunburned skin, etc. This is something we could discuss in detail beforehand.

Is sunless tanning allergy-proof?

Dermatologists universally agree that the fewer the number of ingredients, the less likely the chance of an allergic reaction. Particularly in a spray on product, where inevitably the client will breathe some in, this is critical. Most competitors’ solutions contain 25-32 ingredients, but Aviva Labs has counted some as high as 40 ingredients. Aviva Labs’ formula contains just 13 ingredients. It is important to note that there is no such thing as a 100% allergy-proof product. However, Aviva Labs has dozens of salons & spas per week switch from competitors’ formulas to Aviva Labs specifically because the allergic reactions they were experiencing with the other solution goes away when they switch to Aviva Labs.

What should I do in preparation for the Spray Tan service?

For the best results, there is some prep to be done. Ensure you've already completed any facials, massages, waxing, shaving, and mani/pedi's a day prior to your appointment. The same day of the appointment, be sure to gently exfoliate the areas that will be spray tanned. And DO NOT wear any perfume, creams, lotions, deodorant or make-up for your spray tan appointment; we want a clean canvas.

What should I expect during my tan?

You should plan to strip down, at least mostly. Anything you leave on should be something that you do not mind being soiled. I will offer disposable underwear and bra, hair net, disposable nose filters along with a lotion barrier for calloused areas like the elbows. The whole tanning process, from setup to breakdown, should take 15-20 minutes in total.

How long does a spray tan take to dry?

The Aviva Labs solution dries the fastest in the industry because it is oil-free. Aviva Labs' spray tan dries in seconds.

Do I need to do anything special after my tan?

Yes, depending on the formula you've chosen with me will be the amount of time you should wait before avoiding anything that could compromise the tanning solution's effectiveness being diminished, such as working out (sweating), showering, swimming, etc. Avoid tight clothing. The tanning spray takes time to develop. When using our original tanning formula, it will take about 8 hours to completely develop, and, therefore, clients should not shower until after 8 hours from the time they are sprayed, but you can wait longer if you choose. When using Aviva’s Rapid Solutions, you can shower faster. When using Aviva's Rapid (express) Rinse solutions, the time needed to set depends on your desired color. This time is something that is personalized for each client and will be discussed one-on-one, but one can shower as fast as 30 minutes and leave on up to 6 hours. *Because a DHA tan takes 8 hours to completely develop, no matter how quickly you shower, you should expect to see your full tan after 24 hours. Lastly, for best results, exfoliate your body every couple of days and moisturize every day to ensure your tan is even and looks flawless before your next spray tan. It is recommended that if you are tanning in preparation for a special event, do it one to two days before, that way your tan is fully set in, and your skin is fully moisturized before the special day. For weddings and such, a trial tan is recommended and free of charge.

Why is it important for my clients to moisturize after their spray tan?

It is important to keep skin moisturized after sunless tanning as dry, flaky skin will shed faster and the tan will fade sooner. To slow down the body’s natural exfoliation process, it is essential to moisturize daily. Aviva Inspires Velvet Soft Moisturizing Crème is specifically designed for sunless tanning and extends the life of the tan from 1 to 3 days. Aviva Inspires Skin Glow Moisturizer also extends the life of the tan by 1 to 3 days and also includes a light DHA concentration to help the spray tan fade evenly. If you opt to use your own lotion, please be sure it is free of alcohols, parabens, fragrances and sulfates as they will strip your tan.

How long will my tan last?

The tan typically lasts 5 to 7 days (or up to 10 days when using Aviva Labs Tan-Extending Skincare products). The faster your skin cells turn over and shed from your body, the faster the sunless tan fades. The tan created by the DHA affects only the top layer of the skin and will begin to fade after 4 to 5 days as the skin naturally begins to shed. To get the longest life from a spray tan, it is crucial to exfoliate prior to the spray tan application and to moisturize daily after the application.

Will the spray from a spray tanning application come off on my clothes?

We recommend that you wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your spray session to minimize the chance of the bronzer transferring to clothing. When using a spray solution with bronzer, some of the bronze color may rub off on clothing or bed sheets. However, this is very rare when using Aviva Labs spray tanning solution. Vogue Magazine even nicknamed Aviva Labs as “The Bedsheet Saver.” Aviva Labs Airbrush Sunless Tanning Solution is a clever water-based formula that’s non-sticky and quick-drying, it’s like it never happened – except that the natural-looking color starts to develop instantly… and it won’t rub off on clothes or sheets.”  Also, if you tend to sweat frequently or have oily skin, in general, you have the option of requesting an add-on service of setting powder to give you extra peace of mind.

Do my clients still need to wear sunscreen when going out in the sun?

Absolutely! A spray tan does not protect the skin from UV rays from the sun.

Why choose Aviva brand for spray tanning?

Aviva Labs is a spinoff of a biotech company, so health is their prime directive. Their founders have between them a Ph.D. in biochemistry, a medical degree, and a degree in science (mechanical engineering). In fact, the Ph.D., in addition to running his biotech company, is a professor at the prestigious Northeastern University. The biotech company was founded by scientists from Harvard and MIT. This means we approach skincare from an analytical, scientific angle. You are dealing with professionals, not some amateurs stirring something together in their kitchen. They understand not just how to mix ingredients together, but also why ingredients work. Their solutions are formulated specifically to target the high standards dermatologists would seek. This is why they have more dermatology clinics, med-spas, and plastic surgery clinics that trust Aviva Labs than any other brand. Most competitors’ solutions contain 25-32 ingredients, but Aviva have counted some as high as 40 ingredients. Aviva Labs’ formula contains just 11 ingredients. Because they have the world’s healthiest spray tan solution, more dermatology clinics choose them over any other sunless brand. Aviva Lab’s company motto, Beauty Today. Health for Life.™ has remained the same and reflects their unwavering focus on health.

About Aviva Labs Natural Spray Tanning Solutions

Most competitors don’t list their ingredients on their website. Usually, they will list a few of their “hero” ingredients, the ones they want people to see publicly. In contrast, Aviva is very proud of their ingredients and has nothing to hide. Aviva Labs’ formula contains just 11 ingredients. They have listed their ingredients publicly since their first day in business in 2003. Since the FDA doesn’t regulate the skincare industry, they see many competitors who don’t even list their ingredients on the label of their bottle (even though this is required by the FDA), or they will intentionally omit ingredients from their list. Aviva has purchased and tested competitors’ products that listed three ingredients, but their lab tests showed at least 22 ingredients. Therefore, you can’t believe all the marketing hype you hear from a company.

Will there be an odor which is often associated with sunless tanning?

No, as Aviva Labs' sunless solution (unlike most competitors’ solutions) is fragrance-free.

What are other notable facts about Aviva?

Their formula is oil-free, alcohol-free, fragrance-free, and Erythrulose-free.

Oil (usually Aloe Vera) is used in most competitors’ sunless tanning formulas but not theirs. Aloe is a fantastic moisturizer; they just believe it doesn’t belong in sunless tanning solutions. Though beneficial in other cosmetics and skincare products, Aloe Vera has many negative side effects when used in sunless tanners. Oil can dramatically slow drying times, clog pores and HVLP spray guns, plus stain clothes and bed sheets. Aloe-based or oil-based products also require more air compressor pressure to spray, are more difficult to clean up, and often require the addition of alcohol (which introduces a whole new set of problems) to speed up the drying time. Aviva Labs does NOT use Aloe Vera in their sunless tanners. Instead, they developed a unique, new product that is water-based (oil-free) rather than Aloe Vera-based (oil-based.) Aviva Labs’ solution is highly moisturizing, yet it dries in seconds, rather than minutes like Aloe Vera-based solutions.

Alcohol is usually added into oil-based (Aloe Vera) solutions to speed up the long drying times. Alcohol is very drying to the skin and can cause irritation. Furthermore, alcohol intensifies degradation of DHA and thus shortens the shelf life of the product.

Fragrance is the #1 cause of allergic reactions. Most sunless solutions have almost overpowering fruity or flowery smells. Their other ingredients smell so strong that lots of fragrance must be used to mask the chemicals. Aviva spent much more time developing their products at the beginning to find the best quality, most expensive ingredients that have the least scent, so that our solutions have no smell and don’t need fragrance.

Aviva Labs will never ever use Erythrulose in their products. It’s used in about 90% of competitors’ products. They claim that, similar to DHA, Erythrulose causes the tan to look “better, darker, last longer, etc.” Not only is the performance of Erythrulose negligible, but Erythrulose is not FDA-approved. This doesn’t necessarily mean it is unsafe, but until it is approved, Aviva Labs will not touch it for their products.
