Why Spray Tan?
Spray tanning is a safer, healthier alternative to getting a natural glow or a desired level of tan to boost your confidence, hide imperfections, and to accentuate and add to your style.
What brand of tanning solution do you use?
Take your pick. We currently offer Aviva Labs, Desert Sol, Glazed Sunless, Hawaiian Blend by Kahuna Bay Tan, Paradise Sunless & Beauty, Sjolie, Bronzite by X-Tan, and Sobe. Each has its own unique qualities and should be selected based on each clients' desires and needs. If you do not have a preference, I will choose for you based on the information you provide at the time of booking.
How does a spray tan work?
Dihydroxyacetone (or DHA for short) is the tanning ingredient in all self-tanning formulas. DHA creates a tanned appearance by developing a brown color on the surface of the skin thus creating a tanned appearance. DHA is a colorless 3-carbon sugar that when applied to the skin causes a chemical reaction with amino acids in the surface cells of the skin producing a darkening effect. DHA does not damage skin as it only affects the outermost cells of the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. The tan typically lasts 5 to 7 days and begins to fade as the top layer of skin cells naturally sheds.
Is DHA safe?
The sunless tanner dihydroxyacetone is currently the most popular way of gaining a tan-like appearance without sun exposure as it carries less health risks than any of the other available methods. To date, it is the only active ingredient approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for sunless tanning. The FDA has tested and approved DHA for use on the skin.
Will my spray tan make me look orange?
No. When any tanning product line is used as directed, you will receive the color expected.
Is it safe to spray tan if you are pregnant?
According to the American Pregnancy Association (americanpregnancy.org), not only is it safe, but it is recommended over sun beds or being outside for prolonged periods of time (sunbathing). But please consult with your Doctor and obtain permission beforehand.
What would NOT make me the best candidate for a tan spray?
If you have any persistent skin conditions such as open wounds, rashes, dry patches, eczema, psoriasis, active sunburned skin, etc. This is something we could discuss in detail beforehand and is a question included in our scheduling tool.
Is sunless tanning allergy-proof?
Dermatologists universally agree that the fewer the number of ingredients, the less likely the chance of an allergic reaction. Particularly in a spray on product, where inevitably the client will breathe some in, this is critical. It is important to note that there is no such thing as a 100% allergy-proof product. I now offer the tanning line, Sobe Tan Sunless, which is the cleanest line currently on the market!
What should I do in preparation for the Spray Tan service?
For the best results, there is some prep to be done. Ensure you've already completed any facials, massages, waxing, shaving, and mani/pedi's a day prior to your appointment. The same day of the appointment, be sure to gently exfoliate the areas that will be spray tanned. And DO NOT wear any perfume, creams, lotions, deodorant or make-up for your spray tan appointment; we want a clean canvas.
What should I expect during my tan?
You should plan to strip down, at least mostly. Anything you leave on should be something that you do not mind being soiled. I will offer disposable underwear and bra, hair net, disposable nose filters along with a lotion barrier for calloused areas like the elbows and feet stickies. The whole tanning process, from setup to breakdown, should take 20-30 minutes in total. Currently, I offer a free sample, to every client, per tan, of Hempz Body lotion, which is a recommended brand of lotion that will not alter the integrity of your tan, to get you started on keeping you and your tan looking hydrated and its best.
How long does a spray tan take to dry?
Any oil-free product will dry in seconds. But most tanning solutions dry within a minute on their own. I also use the spray gun blower to dry your skin for a faster drying time.
Do I need to do anything special after my tan?
Yes, depending on the tanning formula and line you've chosen with me will be the amount of time you should wait before avoiding anything that could compromise the tanning solution's effectiveness being diminished, such as working out (sweating), showering, swimming, etc. Avoid tight clothing during this time period. The tanning spray (DHA) takes time to develop. When using our original tanning formula, it will take about 8 hours to completely develop a tan, and, therefore, clients should not rinse until at least after 8 hours from the time they are sprayed, but you can wait longer if you choose. When using any Rapid Solutions, you can rinse faster, but the time needed for the tan to set depends on your desired color. This amount of time is something that is personalized for each client and will be discussed one-on-one, but typically with rapid solutions, one can rinse as fast as 30 minutes and leave on up to 6 hours. But, in my experience, most clients will typically be required to leave on rapid solutions for 2.5-3.5 hours for their desired tan color. Because a DHA tan takes time to completely develop, and no matter what product you are using, whether it be a traditional or a rapid one in all products lines, you should expect to see your full tan color results only after 24 hours. *Please note that when you rinse, as directed herein, you cannot use any soap. A "rinse" is considered to be for only 3-5 minutes using warm water. Using soap during this waiting time period will compromise the integrity of the final tanning result. Only after 24 hours can you shower using soap safe for sunless tanning formulas. Some soaps that are quite agreeable to ensure the integrity of the sunless tan are upheld are Cerave, Cetaphil, Hempz, Meyers, etc. Do not be alarmed during your first rinse when you see the color rinsing off; this is just the bronzer in the tanning solution and is not what tans your skin. Lastly, for best results, exfoliate your body every couple of days and moisturize every day (starting after 24 hours of being sprayed) to ensure your tan is even and looks flawless before your next spray tan. It is recommended that if you are tanning in preparation for a special event, do it one to two days before, that way your tan is fully set in, and your skin is fully moisturized before the special day. For weddings and such, a trial tan is recommended.
Why is it important for my clients to moisturize after their spray tan?
It is important to keep skin moisturized after sunless tanning as dry, flaky skin will shed faster and the tan will fade sooner. To slow down the body’s natural exfoliation process, it is essential to moisturize daily, after your 24 hours waiting period. Please be sure your lotion is free of alcohols, parabens, fragrances and sulfates as they will strip your tan. A few to name are Hempz, Alba, Cetaphil.
How long will my tan last?
The tan typically lasts 5 to 7 days (or up to 10 days when using Tan-Extending Skincare products). The faster your skin cells turn over and shed from your body, the faster the sunless tan fades. The tan created by the DHA affects only the top layer of the skin and will begin to fade after 4 to 5 days as the skin naturally begins to shed. To get the longest life from a spray tan, it is crucial to exfoliate prior to the spray tan application and to moisturize daily after the application.
Will the spray from a spray tanning application come off on my clothes?
We recommend that you wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your spray session to minimize the chance of the bronzer transferring to clothing. When using a spray solution with bronzer, some of the bronze color may rub off on clothing or bed sheets.
Do my clients still need to wear sunscreen when going out in the sun?
Absolutely! A spray tan does not protect the skin from UV rays from the sun.
Will there be an odor which is often associated with sunless tanning?
Not if you tanning solution is fragrance-free. Please view my "Services" page for the formulas that are list as fragrance-free.
