Why Spray Tan?
Spray tanning is a safer, healthier alternative to getting a natural glow or a desired level of tan to boost your confidence, hide imperfections, and to accentuate and add to your style.
How does a spray tan work?
Dihydroxyacetone (or DHA for short) is the tanning ingredient in all self-tanning formulas. DHA creates a tanned appearance by developing a brown color on the surface of the skin thus creating a tanned appearance. DHA is a colorless 3-carbon sugar that when applied to the skin causes a chemical reaction with amino acids in the surface cells of the skin producing a darkening effect. DHA does not damage skin as it only affects the outermost cells of the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. The tan typically lasts 5 to 7 days and begins to fade as the top layer of skin cells naturally sheds.
Is DHA safe?
The sunless tanner dihydroxyacetone is currently the most popular way of gaining a tan-like appearance without sun exposure as it carries less health risks than any of the other available methods. To date, it is the only active ingredient approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for sunless tanning. The FDA has tested and approved DHA for use on the skin.
Will my spray tan make me look orange?
No. When any tanning product line is used as directed, you will receive the color expected.
Is it safe to spray tan if you are pregnant?
According to the American Pregnancy Association (americanpregnancy.org), not only is it safe, but it is recommended over sun beds or being outside for prolonged periods of time (sunbathing). But please consult with your Doctor and obtain permission beforehand.
What would NOT make me the best candidate for a tan spray?
If you have any persistent skin conditions such as open wounds, rashes, dry patches, eczema, psoriasis, active sunburned skin, etc. This is something we could discuss in detail beforehand and is a question included in our scheduling tool.
Is sunless tanning allergy-proof?
Dermatologists universally agree that the fewer the number of ingredients, the less likely the chance of an allergic reaction. Particularly in a spray on product, where inevitably the client will breathe some in, this is critical. It is important to note that there is no such thing as a 100% allergy-proof product. I now offer the tanning line, Sobe Tan Sunless, which is the cleanest line currently on the market!
What should I do in preparation for the Spray Tan service?
Spray tans require prep at least 24 hours or more before your session! Your tan is the very LAST stop! Complete ALL other services at least 24 hours before your tan, such as manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, eyelashes, Botox etc. *Waxing is recommended at least 48 hours or more before your tan. Shower, shave and exfoliate the night before, and NOT right before. Exfoliating the skin is the most important step for a flawless tan outcome! Avoid wearing any lotion, deodorant, jewelry, makeup or any products to your session. Wear dark, loose-fitting long pants, a baggy shirt and loose shoes or flip-flops to your appointment. Do NOT wear jeans, leggings, or dresses. Shorts are also not recommended. Dove soap user? Ditch the Dove as soon as possible! It will create a barrier to your tan. *You can find a list of the products we recommend below! *Please be advised there is a small percentage of people whose skin may not react favorably to a spray tan. Ex- severely dry skin, recently using retinol or skin resurfacing products, Accutane, recent sunburn etc. Please discontinue these products at least 7 days before your session; we can also avoid spraying the treated areas if preferred.
What should I expect during my tan?
You should plan to strip down, at least mostly. Anything you leave on should be something that you do not mind being soiled. I offer disposable underwear and bra, hair net, disposable nose filters along with a lotion barrier for calloused areas like the elbows and feet stickies. The whole tanning process, from setup to breakdown, should take 20-30 minutes in total.
How long does a spray tan take to dry?
Most tanning solutions dry within a minute on their own. I also use the spray gun blower to dry your skin for a faster drying time.
Do I need to do anything special after my tan?
Rinse at the time your technician advises you to, and yes, we mean it! Do NOT touch your tan and avoid skin-to-skin contact until your water rinse. When rinsing, use warm water and NO soap to rinse off the top coat, also known as the cosmetic bronzer. Use your hands to brush the water across your body until the water runs clear down the drain, ensuring all of your cosmetic bronzer coat is washed off. Don't worry, this is not your spray tan washing away! Gently blot your skin with a towel to dry and moisturize immediately after. Worried your tan looks lighter after you rinsed it? It totally will! Your tan takes a full 24 hours to see the final result. Wait about 24 hours to shower with soap or body wash after your appointment. Your tan needs moisture to last! Moisturize every morning and night to prolong the life of your tan. AFTER your tan, avoid the following as much as possible: Ocean, hot tubs and swimming pools, exfoliating products and loofahs, exercise/sweating for 24 hours, but please be aware that sweat may affect your tan even if you wait longer than 24 hours to sweat, perfume or any sprays for 24 hours, soaps or lotions or products containing mineral oils. *Spray Tan Tip: The instant cosmetic bronzer that you see upon application is like makeup! It will build up/move around or smudge and may appear imperfect. It is important to wait until after the first initial rinse and full soap shower to see the real results!
Why is it important for my clients to moisturize after their spray tan?
It is important to keep skin moisturized after sunless tanning as dry, flaky skin will shed faster and the tan will fade sooner. To slow down the body’s natural exfoliation process, it is essential to moisturize daily, after your 24 hours waiting period. Please be sure your lotion is free of alcohols, parabens, fragrances and sulfates as they will strip your tan.
How long will my tan last?
The tan typically lasts 5 to 7 days. The faster your skin cells turn over and shed from your body, the faster the sunless tan fades. The tan created by the DHA affects only the top layer of the skin and will begin to fade after 4 to 5 days as the skin naturally begins to shed. To get the longest life from a spray tan, it is crucial to exfoliate prior to the spray tan application and to moisturize daily after the application.
Will the spray from a spray tanning application come off on my clothes?
We recommend that you wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your spray session to minimize the chance of the bronzer transferring to clothing. When using a spray solution with bronzer, some of the bronze color may rub off on clothing or bed sheets.
Do my clients still need to wear sunscreen when going out in the sun?
Absolutely! A spray tan does not protect the skin from UV rays from the sun.
Will there be an odor which is often associated with sunless tanning?
Not if you tanning solution is fragrance-free. Please view my "Services" page for the formulas that are list as fragrance-free.
Reminders and additional Sunless Tans Tips
Soaps and lotions to avoid with a spray tan: Dove, Victoria's Secret, Jergens, Baby Oil, Caress, St. Ives, Oil of Olay, Bath & Body works. *Anything containing mineral oil, sulfates, witch hazel, alcohol, petroleum, acids and sodium laurel sulfate.
Other notables: Please be advised that chlorine (pools, hot tubs, etc.), saunas and steam rooms, and Retin-A's (i.e. Tretinoin), face masks, and anti-acne products will compromise your tan.
To avoid an uneven and brassy tan, it's best to steer clear of products that contain chemicals. Mineral oil can also strip the tan, so it's important to choose gentle, chemical-free products for a flawless and even tan.
Recommended SOAP & BODY WASH: Choose only ph balanced soaps for your spray tan, sulfate free body wash and gentle moisturizing cleansers.
The main ingredient in Dove and other common household soaps that are considered bad for a spray tan is sulfates; these can strip away the outer layer of skin where the tan is applied, causing it to fade quickly and become patchy.
